AI and Blockchain: a bright opportunity for EU-China cooperation

Digital Day 2018, ChinaEU: Europe must cooperate more with China in Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain technologies.

“It is very positive that the EU starts promoting artificial intelligence and innovative technologies such as block-chain, but the EU cannot go alone. The EU strategy will only be successful if the EU increases cooperation with China, which is becoming the leader in this area. ” It is the message of Mr. Luigi Gambardella, President of ChinaEU, on the sidelines of Digital Day 2018 where the EU Commission has announced a series of new digital initiatives, from e-health to 5G ‘highways’.

Just few days ago, China has announced a fund with one-billion euros to invest in block-chain technology research, dwarfing the amounts made available in the EU through fragmented initiatives and still embryonic funds. And the new Chinese fund is only one of several initiatives launched by Beijing to increase its advance in digital technologies.

Hence the warning from the president of ChinaEU: “if we want the EU strategy to succeed, linking up with the tremendous research activities in China and arriving to win-win joint development formulas must be the priority of the EU Commission, of EU research centers and of EU businesses undertaking research in these areas. Companies from both regions could dramatically benefit from it by reducing substantially the time for going to the market with new services and applications, to the benefit of the consumers”.

ChinaEU is a business-led International Association aimed at intensifying joint research, business cooperation and mutual investments in Internet, Telecom and Hi-tech between China and Europe. ChinaEU provides a platform for constructive dialogue among industry leaders and top-level representatives of European Institutions and the Chinese Government.
