Achieving Positive Results in Sustainability Transitions
For sustainability transitions to be successful it is necessary to engage all members of society. Research funding may be allocated to numerous sustainability- related projects but how many of them really have a visible positive impact in people’s lives? This session will discuss how to translate words into action, policy measures and research results into practical outcomes, and will question who and when needs to get involved to achieve meaningful sustainability transformations.

Dr Richard Elelman (EURECAT)
Richard Elelman studied Politics in the UK before living in France, Spain, Portugal, Sudan, the Middle East and India. A former teacher, journalist, actor and director of theatre, he is currently Head of Politics at EURECAT, and is the founder and Director General of the Network for Water in European Regions and Cities, NETWERC H2O. The former Deputy Mayor of Figueres, he is a political analyst who has, in recent years, specialised in Environmental and Scientific Policy and the links between Politics, the world of Research and Development and Citizen Engagement. He works in collaboration with many supranational organisations such as the UN Environment Programme, (as the leader of the Social Engagement Programme of the World Water Quality Alliance) The OECD, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission as an External Expert (for whom he is co-leading the establishment of the RENAISSANCE approach to Science-CultureSustainability), the World Bank and the Union for the Mediterranean (Water-EmploymentMigration Group). A Director of Water Europe and a former member of the Steering Group of EIP WATER, he is currently co-editing the books entitled ‘The Gateway to the Future of the Mediterranean’ (for the European Commission) and is writing another regarding the domino effect which links Climate Change to migration, conflict and the increase in gender inequality.
Dr Rosa Maria Fernandez (Keele University)
Dr Rosa M. Fernandez Martin is an applied economist specialised in sustainability related topics, including renewable energies economics and policies, food security and food sustainability, education for sustainable development, or corporate social responsibility, among others. She has wide teaching and research experience in Economics, having worked at UNED (Spain), the University of Birmingham and the University of Chester, where she was Programme Leader in Economics and Deputy Head of Department in Social and Political Science. She joined Keele Business School in June 2023 from the University of Warwick, where she was Associate Professor in Global Sustainable Development in charge of distance learning provision.
She has published numerous articles and book chapters in her main areas of research expertise and has taught a wide range of modules in Economics both at undergraduate and graduate levels (including micro and macroeconomics, economic thought, international trade, public sector economics and development economics), with specialisation in Environmental Economics. She is associate editor of several international peer reviewed journals and regular reviewer for transdomain projects for the COST initiative of the European Commission.
Martijn Pakker (IEEP)
Martijn joined IEEP in January 2023 as Head of Strategic Relations and Activities. Prior to joining IEEP, Martijn spent several years in Asia and South America spearheading partnerships and advocacy for CGIAR research institutions based in the Global South, with a focus on sustainability, agriculture and public health in the context of the SDGs. Prior to this, Martijn worked in Brussels focused on sustainable development policy. A Dutch national, Martijn speaks English, Dutch, French, Spanish and German and has a background in Eastern European Studies and organisational psychology.
Chair: Dr Pamela M. Barnes (ESSCA)
Dr Pamela M. Barnes, Jean Monnet Chair ‘ad personam’ in European Political Integration, Research Fellow at EU-Asia Institute, ESSCA School of Management, Angers, France, formerly University of Lincoln, UK, has researched and published widely in the areas of EU environmental and energy policies throughout her academic career. Her most recent publications include Sustainable Development and Governance in Europe, co-edited with Hoerber, published pb (2015), Routledge; The Politics of Nuclear Energy in the European Union – framing the discourse, actors, positions and dynamics, (2018), Barbara Budrich Publishers, and Sustainable Development in the European Union (2021), in Hoerber, T, Weber, G. and Cabras, I. The Routledge Book of European Integrations, Routledge. Her current research interests include analysis of the role of nuclear energy policy in sustainable energy policy. Since 2007 Dr. Barnes has served as an independent expert evaluator for a number of ERASMUS plus initiatives, funded by the European Union, especially the Jean Monnet Action Programme to promote excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Studies.
