The Conference on the Future of Europe: success or failure?
Where are we one year before the EP elections?
Press Club Brussels, Rue Froissart 95
8 June 2023, 18:30hrs – 20:00hrs
One year after the Conference on the Future of Europe and before the European Parliament elections of 2024, Europe is facing big threats, challenges and opportunities. The Russian aggression against Ukraine continues, the ghost of a banking crisis has emerged again, inflation remains high, the French society has been in turmoil. These and many other events of international scale have affected the lives of Belgian and European people. What is now local is also global and we need common solutions.
In May 2022 the Conference on the Future of Europe was concluded. It delivered certain outcomes about how the European Parliament, the EU Council and the European Commission should act for a stronger, more united and more efficient European Union. It is supposed to continue as standard process of participatory democracy at European level.
At the same time, a proposal for the way forward has been presented by the book of Yannis Karamitsios “Time for a European Federation” (Peter Lang, December 2021)[1]. It makes the case for the creation of a sovereign European federal state. It explains the reasons why this would be necessary to address the challenges of globalisation, climate change and the fourth industrial revolution.
Volt Belgium and Yannis Karamitsios are thus inviting you, on 8 June 2023, to a panel discussion about the state of European affairs, the progress of the Conference on the Future of Europe, and the prospects of a more united and even federated continent.
Panel speakers:
Daniel Freund, Member of the European Parliament, Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance
Johanna Dirlewanger – Lücke, Co-President of Volt Belgium
Omri Preiss, Managing Director of Alliance 4 Europe
Yannis Karamitsios, author of ‘Time for a European Federation’
Moderator: Katerina Serifi
