The Embassy of Bangladesh and Mission to the European Union in Brussels

is observing the Language Martyrs’ Day of Bangladesh and International Mother Language Day

on Tuesday, 21 February 2023 at 1700 hrs at the Press Club Brussels Europe.

On 21 February 1952, student protestors, activists and the people of Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan) laid down their lives for establishing the right to speak in their mother tongue, Bangla. The seeds of freedom, tolerance, inclusion laid by this Language Movement, culminated two decades later into the historic War of Liberation and Independence of Bangladesh in 1971, led by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Over the years, the language movement of Bangladesh garnered international attention, being a unique one in history that strived for linguistic and cultural rights. In November 1999, in honour of the Movement, the martyrs and to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, UNESCO declared 21 February as ‘‘International Mother Language Day’’.

Martin Hříbek PhD, from the Institute of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague will be speaking on “Language and People’s Identity”.

The Embassy cordially invites guests to join the event on 21 February 2023 at 1700 hrs.
