Panel discussion “Defending the Freedom of Speech”

Date(s) - 20/10/2021
11:00 - 12:30

Press Club Brussels Europe

Human Rights Without Frontiers extends an invitation to interested parties to attend this panel discussion.

Freedom of speech is the right to state one’s opinions and ideas without being stopped or punished. It is fundamental principle defended by the Brussels Press Club. Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states:-

”Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

It is essential for the safe operation of the media that they are able to articulate ideas or opinions without censorship by the government, retaliation or legal sanctions.

Former US President Thomas Jefferson said “Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.”

Yet, Freedom of Speech is a right that we cannot take for granted. It is been now under constant attack, and must be vigorously defended against totalitarian governments, religious bigots and dictators if we are to protect the principles of European democracy and values that we cherish.

This round table discussion brings together a panel of experts with a wealth of experience from Journalism and from organisations dealing with the protection of human rights to outline some of the dangers our society is currently facing. Examples include the brutal crackdown against the free press in Belarus, China, Russia and other countries, the surveillance of journalists through manipulation of the private data on their mobile phones in Hungary, and more.

The panel will analyse these threats and recommend what actively needs to be done to protect the Freedom of Speech and the Freedom of the Media.
