Activist & Security Analyst Chelsea Manning speaks at the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection Conference (CPDP)

Having recently returned from the Ukrainian/Polish border, Manning will speak on Sunday 22 May about the urgency of private and secure communications – particularly in the context of trans rights activism in conditions of conflict. During the panel discussion, Manning will be in conversation with cryptographer and KU Leuven Professor Bart Preneel, and Harry Halpin, CEO of Nym Technologies.

Beyond issues of privacy and data protection, it is of vital importance to explore central themes affecting today’s digital society in the wider context of pre-existing power relations

In the context of mass-surveillance, these power relations become more salient, and privacy-preserving digital infrastructures become more important. Manning will address these issues on a panel at the CPDP conference on Wednesday 25 May. Entitled ‘Tackling surveillance and its business model through decentralisation – discussing infrastructure and token economics’, the panel will discuss whether the surveillance incentive and big powerful providers that collect data for profit can be left out of the equation, and how that infrastructure can be made sustainable.

Chelsea Manning will also be present at a press conference on Monday 23 May. The press conference takes place from 10:30 – 11:30 at Press Club Brussels Europe, Rue Froissart 95, 1000 Brussels.
