BELGIUM TABLES A SHARED RESOLUTION PROPOSAL ON THE HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN IDLIB
Today, Belgium, together with Kuwait and Germany, presented a resolution to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which calls for an immediate ceasefire in Idlib, in the North-West of Syria. Belgium, Germany and Kuwait share a particular responsibility within the Security Council regarding the humanitarian aspects of the conflict in Syria.
Idlib, that counts more than 3 million inhabitants, is one of the last regions in the country that is not controlled by the government. Terrorist groups are also active there.
Since April this year, the Syrian regime is trying to take Idlib back by force, making hundreds of civil victims and more than 400.000 internally displaced persons (IDPs). Syria systematically aims for citizens and civilians targets, such as hospitals and schools.
Over the last few months, Belgium, Kuwait and Germany have called several meetings of the Security Council in order to tackle the escalation of violence in and around Idlib, and to call all parties to comply with international humanitarian law.
Through this shared resolution proposal, our country wants to incite the Security Council to act collectively in order to help the population in Syria. The resolution has to increase the pressure on Syria in order to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe similar to the one we have witnessed in Alep.
