ICCA joins global alliance to strengthen sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020
The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) announced its commitment to join the High Ambition Alliance (HAA) on Chemicals and Waste. “Joining the High Ambition Alliance is a key step toward the sound management of chemicals and waste”, said Cefic’s Véronique Garny, representing ICCA at the COP25 meeting of the HAA in Madrid.
ICCA is committed to making meaningful progress to enhance the safe management of chemicals and waste around the globe. Guiding the way is the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM). SAICM is a voluntary, multi-stakeholder, multi-sectorial approach that enables all relevant stakeholders to contribute to building a stronger foundation for the sound management of chemicals and waste.
The HAA dialogue is a valuable addition to the work undertaken in SAICM as it moves beyond 2020. Although the SAICM 2020 objective has not been fully met, “its approach is unique and efficient as more synergies and collaboration will be required in future”. HAA can serve a valuable role by building and leveraging broad and inclusive coalitions between governments, industry, and other stakeholders.
The HAA meeting in Madrid was a first step in identifying the way forward in improving the safe management of chemicals and waste globally. ICCA will be participating as a stakeholder along the way, complimenting the work of SAICM.
