Climate and Energy Rally on 20 October from 17.30 to 19.00 in Brussels during the European Council Summit of Heads of State and Government
The 27 European Heads of State and Government will all be in Brussels on 20 October.
With the participation of a coalition of European and Belgian NGOs, representatives of Amazonian communities, scientists and youth organizations, the citizen movement Rise for Climate Belgium will lead a rally to demand from the European Council more ambitious climate policies to meet the commitments contained in the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement.
Energy will be on the Council’s agenda, and while we support Europe’s energy independence plans moving towards more renewables, we also demand the right to energy for all.
After a summer battered by record fires and droughts not seen in Europe for 500 years, and by heat waves that have claimed tens of thousands of premature deaths, we’re counting on much stronger responses to the climate emergency from the 27. We call for the climate to be on the agenda of every European Council summit.
The objective of carbon neutrality by 2050 is too far away, and European policies must be consistent with the Green Deal. Europe should therefore withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty; abandon the EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement; recognize the crime of ecocide in European law; stop subsidies and investments in fossil fuels; establish a European financial transaction tax (FTT); reform the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in order to promote more sustainable agriculture; and protect the human right of access to water.
