Didier Reynders welcomes conclusions of Foreign Affairs Council on Women, Peace and Security
Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Didier Reynders participated in the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union in Brussels. He welcomes the conclusions of the Council on Women, Peace and Security.
With these conclusions, the Council approves the new European strategy on the theme ‘Women, Peace and Security’. The strategy will implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325. This resolution contains a global commitment to the protection and prevention of violence against women and girls in conflict situations, and to give women a meaningful place in peace and security decision-making processes.
Minister Reynders emphasizes that this issue is a priority in our foreign policy. Our country is currently implementing its third national action plan ‘Women, Peace and Security’, which contains concrete action paths for the protection and promotion of the role of women in conflict situations. For example, the Minister recently decided to allocate €2,000,000 to UN Women to promote the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Afghanistan.
The Minister is also committed to keeping the situation of women in conflict situations high on the agenda of the UN Security Council, during our two-year mandate that will start in January 2019.
