Argentina has announced its decision to suspend participation in the negotiations of current trade agreements and of future negotiations of the Mercosur bloc, but explicitly stated it would continue with the European Union and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) agreements.
The EU welcomes Argentina’s continued commitment to the EU-Mercosur Association Agreement and remains strongly committed to bringing the Agreement into force as soon as possible.
The coronavirus crisis demonstrates that solidarity, open trade and rules based multilateral cooperation is the only avenue for recovery. Hence, it is crucial to focus on a positive agenda to reinforce future political dialogue, cooperation and economic exchanges between Mercosur and the EU. Acting together and using the instruments we have at hand will help address the immediate crisis and prepare the ground for economic recovery on both sides of the Atlantic. The Association Agreement will play a major role to boost this relationship.
