On Thursday 10 June, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, met with Yemeni Foreign Affairs Minister, Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak. High Representative/Vice-President Borrell reiterated EU strong support to the Government and people of Yemen, highlighting the significant work of the EU in the political, economic and humanitarian spheres. They discussed the latest, intense efforts of the international community for a ceasefire in Yemen. High Representative mentioned the recent visit of Swedish Foreign Minister Linde to the region, whom he mandated to convey a strong message in support of peace. High Representative Borrell and Foreign Minister bin Mubarak agreed that the onus is on Ansar Allah to engage constructively on the current plan tabled by the United Nations.
The High Representative expressed deep concern about the situation in the country, as regards continued fighting on multiple fronts, the economic collapse and the dire humanitarian situation. He noted the importance of Yemeni Government coalition partners to fully implement the Riyadh Agreement. He reiterated his call on all parties to the conflict to cease hostilities without delay, and to commence inclusive political talks. He also recalled the EU condemnation of all attacks on civilians. He emphasised the importance of an inclusive peace process.
High Representative Borrell stressed the need for full facilitation of humanitarian work across Yemen. This is vital to avert famine and address extreme levels of malnutrition in the country.
