European Union opens a new Delegation in Kuwait City
On this occasion, Federica Mogherini said: “This new European Delegation to Kuwait is first and foremost a sign of how close the European Union and Kuwait have become in these years. In a moment of regional and global tensions, Kuwait is a voice of wisdom and a force for peace. And this is what has made us natural partners in these difficult times.”
During her visit in Kuwait, the High Representative had an audience with His Highness the Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, she also met Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. In the discussions, Federica Mogherini appreciated the constructive role Kuwait is playing in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) rift through its continuous mediation efforts at the highest level. The EU equally values Kuwait’s commitment towards peaceful settlement of regional conflicts, in particular the war in Yemen, and to multilateralism. Kuwait is also an important ally of the European Union in the humanitarian field, spearheading reconstruction in Iraq and addressing some of the major human crises of our times.
The opening of the new EU Delegation in Kuwait Citymarks a new chapter in EU-Kuwait relations. It will contribute to strengthening bilateral relations through enhanced political dialogue as well as economic and sectoral cooperation, in particular in support of Kuwait’s “Vision 2035”, building up on the long-established ties that EU Member States enjoy with Kuwait. The new Delegation will also aim to enhance people-to-people relations and to build bridges between Kuwaiti society and European citizens.
The EU Delegation to Kuwait is the third to be established in the Gulf, following those in Saudi Arabia and in the United Arab Emirates. It will also be responsible for EU’s relations with the State of Qatar. This reinforced EU’s presence in the region will further strengthen the dialogue and cooperation with Gulf partners at a time of mounting challenges to peace and security.
