Federica Mogherini meets with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen
Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met in Brussels this morning with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen with whom she has been in contact since the beginning of his mandate.
The High Representative and the UN Special Envoys discussed the situation in Syria and the latest evolutions on the ground, including in Idlib, as well as their impact on the Geneva peace process. The High Representative reiterated the EU full support to the UN and the Geneva process who is at the core of the implementation of the UNSCR 2254 for a credible transition in Syria as the only sustainable solution to the conflict.
The UN Special Envoy briefed the High Representative on the outcomes of his dialogues with the main stakeholders in the Syrian conflict and the upcoming plans in view of working for a resumption of the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva. The High Representative briefed as well Mr Pedersen about her recent contacts with the main regional and international actors, and the latest discussions at the Foreign Affairs Council of 18 February.
Federica Mogherini and Geir Pedersen discussed at length the preparations for the third Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, due to take place from 12 to 14 of March, and the side-events with a focus on the role of civil society and women platforms. They agreed to continue their consultations
