Andreas Schieder, S&D MEP and co-chair of the GPF said:

Local authorities are one of the pillars of democracy as they are closest political contact point in the daily lives of our citizens. Therefore, they can make valuable contributions to solving many everyday problems. As progressives, we always strive for more social cohesion and fairer societies that deliver tangible results. We stand ready to fight for global solidarity and local communities will play a key role in this. It is time to focus on the people, the planet and prosperity, instead of free markets and maximising profits.”

Speakers at the event include Andreas Schieder, S&D MEP and co-chair of the GPF; Gunter Pauli, economist and author of the “Blue Economy”; Sunita Narain, Indian environmentalist, director general of the India-based research institute the Centre for Science and Environment and director of the Society for Environmental Communications; Carolina Urrutia Vásquez, Environment Secretary, City of Bogotá, Colombia; and Paul Magnette, Mayor of Charleroi, Belgium. The event is open to the public and will be moderated by the Brussels-based freelance journalist Beatriz Ríos.

The event forms part of a series of one hundred online events being organised by the different GPF partners from April to November 2021 covering various topics linked to the progressive agenda.  The next joint event will be on 29 June 2021 and focus on “Resilient democracies in Asia/Oceania”. Further information on all the upcoming preparatory events can be found on the Global Progressive Forum website.
