Long-term decarbonisation strategy: A Clean Planet for all – A European strategic long-term vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate neutral economy

Bioenergy recognised as a key contributor to achieve a net-zero carbon economy by 2050

Brussels, 28th November 2018 – Today, the Commission has published its long-term strategy for emission reductions looking at different options to reduce greenhouse gas emission by at least 80% with more ambitious scenarios achieving a balance between greenhouse gas emissions and removals by 2050. Bioenergy Europe welcomes that bioenergy is one of the key solutions to reach a high ambition net-zero carbon pathway by 2050
Bioenergy Europe is glad to see that bioenergy is put forward as one of the key solutions to achieve a net-zero carbon economy by 2050 and this in symbiosis with a wider bio-economy relying on a sustainable feedstock from forests and agriculture.

Bioenergy has the potential to increase significantly within the limits of a sustainably available biomass potential and provides versatile and flexible technologies in the heating & cooling, transport and electricity sector including the possibility for negative emissions.

β€œIn its long-term strategy, the Commission recognises the importance of bioenergy to achieve a net-zero carbon economy by 2050. Now, we need a clear implementation roadmap for investments to take place, especially in the heating sector.”, Jean-Marc Jossart, Secretary-General of Bioenergy Europe explains.

The bioenergy sector calls upon Member States and the European Parliament to strongly support the net-zero pathway among the options presented by the Commission in order to show EU leadership in the implementation of the Paris Agreement and create a secure framework for investments in renewables.
