López Obrador opens a new era of hope to reduce violence and inequalities in Mexico, say S&Ds
Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament congratulate the newly elected president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for his landslide victory in yesterday’s elections, following a campaign in which he vowed to fight poverty, crime and corruption.
S&D coordinator of the EU-Latin America parliamentary assembly (EUROLAT), MEP Francisco Assis, said:
“The election of López Obrador opens a new political cycle in Mexico. It is anticipated that the inspiration of his values, which are those of democratic socialism, will allow for a reduction of the inequalities that persist despite the economic dynamism, as well as the intolerable levels of violence.”
S&D MEP Ramón Jáuregui, who co-chairs EUROLAT, added:
“We wholeheartedly congratulate López Obrador, as well as the Mexican people. This left-wing victory opens many expectations of change. It will suffice to accomplish them step by step, over the next six years. However, it will not be easy, because the necessary changes are deep and difficult, and they require both time and support. In that way, he can count on all our support.”
