Launch of UNEP’s Global Cooling Watch and announcement of Global Cooling Pledge

At the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), the UN Environment Programme will launch the Global Cooling Watch Report – Keeping it chill: How to meet cooling demands while cutting emissions. The report takes a comprehensive view of cooling and trajectories and opportunities to achieve near-zero emissions. It evaluates the mitigation potential and policy actions related to all types of cooling, including stationary applications (residential and non-residential space cooling, cold chains, and process cooling) and transport applications (mobile air-conditioning and refrigerated transport).

The launch of the report precedes the unveiling, later the same day, of a Global Cooling Pledge spearheaded by the COP28 United Arab Emirates Presidency and the UNEP-led Cool Coalition. The voluntary Pledge aims to raise ambition and international cooperation through collective global targets to slash cooling-related emissions. Findings from the Global Cooling Watch have informed the development of the Global Cooling Pledge’s targets.
