Meeting in New York between members of the International Contact Group on Venezuela and of the Lima Group

The EU High Representative and the Foreign Ministers of Portugal and Uruguay, in representation of the International Contact Group (ICG), met today in New York with the Foreign Ministers of Canada, Peru and Chile, in representation of the Lima group, to discuss the situation in Venezuela. This is part of the ICG’s decision to intensify diplomatic engagement with relevant players in the international community.

The European Union’s High Representative / Vice-President, Federica Mogherini, and the Foreign Ministers of Portugal, Augusto Santos Silva, and of Uruguay, Rodolfo Nin Novoa, in representation of the International Contact Group (ICG), met today in New York with the Foreign Ministers of Canada, Chrystia Freeland, of Peru, Néstor Popolizio, and of Chile, Roberto Ampuero, in representation of the Lima group, to discuss the situation in Venezuela, as part of the ICG’s decision to intensify diplomatic engagement with relevant players in the international community.

The exchange took place at the United Nation and was preceded by a preparatory meeting among the members of the International Contact Group. It was also attended by the recently appointed Special Adviser of the High Representative for Venezuela, Enrique Iglesias.

The discussions focused on the ongoing efforts to contribute to a political, peaceful and democratic solution, through free and fair elections; as well as on ways to scale up assistance to address the the dire humanitarian situation affecting the Venezuelan population.

In this regard, High Representative Mogherini also had a meeting with the United Nations’ Under-Secretary General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock.

The International Contact Group will continue its outreach with international players. A meeting with the Caribbean Community (Caricom) will take place in the near future
