27 Voices for a Green and Just Recovery
On 18 June, European citizen and youth movements will call
on EU Leaders to raise ambition on climate action
On the eve of the European Council of June 19 where the leaders of the 27 member states will discuss the EU budget plan intended to power an economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis, 27 representatives of European citizen movements and youth climate activists will call upon each of their heads of state and government to make the Green Deal the driver of economic recovery.
In a videoconference « 27 Voices for a Green and Just Recovery » broadcast live at 18.00 (CEST) on the Facebook page of Rise for Climate Belgium, one spokesperson from each member state will present a scorecard on their national climate policies and speak directly to their head of state or government in their own language.
We are calling on EU decision makers to:
• agree on a more ambitious EU climate objective for 2030, committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% and even 65% (compared to 40% now)
• support an economic recovery based on the European Green Deal. This must be made possible by adequate funding levels, international cooperation and solidarity, ensuring a just transition, and eliminating subsidies to polluting industries
• adopt bold and effective national climate policies in line with the objectives of the Paris agreement
In support of these demands, Rise for Climate Belgium is partnering with WeMove.EU tocirculate a Europewide petition calling for a green recovery plan “for people and the planet” which has already collected more than 320,000 signatures.
Our action is supported by numerous organizations including Fridays for Future (FFF) International, Workers for Future, Citoyens pour le Climat, Unis pour le Climat, Penser L’Après, Grootouders voor het Klimaat, and Youth for Climate France. We will broadcast the videoconference from the studio of the Press Club Brussels Europe.
Climate change, the destruction of ecosystems and their catastrophic consequences (heat waves, cyclones, floods, droughts, pandemics…): these are so many dire warnings that the challenge we face is nothing less than the future habitability of the planet. Since September 2018, the citizen collective Rise for Climate Belgium has mobilized to pressure the European Union in the fight against climate change and the loss of biodiversity
