S&Ds calls for free and fair elections to end political impasse in Venezuela (EN/ES)
The European Parliament today voted a resolution denouncing the human rights situation in Venezuela. The Socialists and Democrats expressed their solidarity with the people of Venezuela and called for a negotiated solution to lead to free and fair elections as the only way out of the political impasse, which has caused this severe social and humanitarian crisis.
Javi López, MEP and responsible for Venezuela in the S&D Group, said:
“The people of Venezuela are suffering: with frequent shortages of food and medicine, seven million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Four million people have already fled their country, the second largest refugee crisis in the world. Now, UN High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet’s report has revealed that nearly 7000 people have been killed extra judicially in the past year and half. The wide spread impunity for human rights violators is unacceptable.
“A peaceful, negotiated and democratic solution is the only way forward for the people of Venezuela. Now that the talks between the government and the opposition facilitated by Norway seem to yield first positive results, we have to support the dialogue even more strongly until it leads to free and fair elections under international observation. The S&D Group stands in solidarity with the people of Venezuela.”
Tonino Picula, MEP and S&D spokesperson on foreign affairs, added:
“The EU has the capacity to be a positive influence on the situation in Venezuela and the region. For the sake of the Venezuelan people, the EU and its member states must remain united in their support of a return to democratic normality and to the constitutional order through a peaceful and calm political process. The EU is called upon to continue to provide humanitarian aid and resources to the Venezuelan people, but also to the neighbouring countries Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, who have shown great solidarity in providing shelters to the people fleeing the country.”

El Grupo S&D exige elecciones libres y justas para acabar con el bloqueo político en Venezuela
El Parlamento Europeo ha votado hoy una resolución para denunciar la situación de los derechos humanos en Venezuela. Los Socialistas y Demócratas han expresado su solidaridad con los venezolanos y las venezolanas y han reclamado una solución negociada para lograr elecciones justas y libres como única salida al bloqueo político que ha causado una severa crisis social y humanitaria.
Javi López, eurodiputado encargado de Venezuela en el Grupo S&D, afirmó que:
“El pueblo de Venezuela está sufriendo: en una situación de frecuente escasez de comida y medicinas, siete millones de personas necesitan asistencia humanitaria con urgencia. Cuatro millones de personas han huido de su país, la segunda mayor crisis humanitaria en el mundo. El informe del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas Michelle Bachelet ha revelado que cerca de 7000 personas han sido asesinadas de manera extrajudicial en el último año y medio. La impunidad con la que se trata a los violadores de derechos humanos es inaceptable.
“Una solución pacífica, negociada y democrática es el único camino posible para el pueblo venezolano. Ahora que las conversaciones entre el Gobierno y la oposición facilitadas por Noruega parecen haber logrado los primeros resultados positivos, tenemos que apoyar el diálogo todavía más hasta que conduzca a elecciones libres y justas bajo observación internacional. El Grupo S&D se solidariza con los venezolanos y las venezolanas”.

“La UE tiene de la capacidad de influenciar de manera positiva la situación en Venezuela y en la región. Por el bien del pueblo de Venezuela, la UE y los Estados miembros deben seguir unidos en su apoyo a la vuelta a la normalidad democrática y al orden constitucional a través de un proceso político pacífico y tranquilo. Reclamamos a la UE que continúe facilitando ayuda humanitaria y recursos al pueblo de Venezuela, pero también a países vecinos como Colombia, Ecuador y Perú, que han mostrado una gran solidaridad proporcionando refugio a las personas que han huido del país”.
