If anyone can deliver a progressive, sustainable approach on cohesion and reforms, it’s Elisa Ferreira, say S&Ds

S&D Euro MPs gave their full backing to the appointment of Elisa Ferreira as Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms following her hearing yesterday in the European Parliament. They stressed that her experience and knowledge of the policy area, her commitment to keep the balance between climate, digital transitions and the social component of the EU make her the right fit for the job.

Heléne Fritzon, S&D Group vice-president for a new social Europe of equality, cohesion and strong rights, said:

“We need forward-thinking, progressive people at the helm of the European Commission and Ms Ferreira is part of that progressive team that can deliver the change Europe needs. It is not by austerity that we can achieve growth. This is a fact that our progressive family knows well and which will, undoubtedly, be implemented by our Commissioner-designate upon receiving confirmation of her post.

“High-quality investments wherever needed, climate and digital transition, support of structural reforms in member states, a sustainable development of Europe’s regions and cities, focusing on remote areas – these are crucial areas in her portfolio. We are convinced her professional abilities make her the most qualified candidate for this position. ”

Constanze Krehl, S&D spokesperson on regional development, added:

“Elisa Ferreira fully convinced us of her capabilities as Commissioner in this hearing. Cohesion funds are essential to make the European Union fit for the future. They support many projects in the areas of innovation, social inclusion, job creation and the fight against climate change.

“Being one third of the EU budget, cohesion funds can make a big difference in steering the Union towards a carbon neutral future.  We were very satisfied with her answers to our questions and her views on a modern cohesion policy.”

Note to editors

Cohesion and Reforms is a crucial portfolio in the new Commission. Our political family’s main priorities for the next term will be:

  • a strong Cohesion Policy budget. Anything below the present level is unacceptable;
  • sustainable climate and digital transitions;
  • fighting against unemployment and especially youth unemployment, the European Pillar of Social Rights and support for the integration of migrants;
  • a Just Transition Fund aimed to support the most affected;
  • integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
