The European Union congratulates H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on his election as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Speakers of both Houses, and the Members of the Federal Parliament on their election and on the timely conclusion of the Presidential election.
A complex and delayed electoral process has now been finalised.
Every electoral process should be a step towards building an inclusive and democratic society benefiting the population as a whole. Pursuing much needed political, economic and security reforms to build a democratic Somalia based on the rule of law must be at the heart of the agenda of the new authorities.
The EU is looking forward to close collaboration with H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the government to be appointed urgently as Somalia embarks on serious efforts of reconciliation, including between federal and regional levels, state-building, development and consolidation of peace.
