Statement by the Spokesperson on Angola’s accession to key human rights conventions
On 2 October, Angola became party to the Optional Protocol aiming to the abolition of the death penalty, to the Convention against Torture and other cruel inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and to the Convention on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination.
The European Union welcomes Angola’s alignment with these three important international treaties on human rights. In doing so, Angola reinforces the global trend towards the abolition of the capital punishment, the eradication of torture and the elimination of all forms of racism.
These accessions by Angola should encourage other countries to follow this example.
The European Union reaffirms its strong commitment to the universal abolition of the death penalty, to combatting torture and other ill-treatment worldwide as well as all forms of racism
