Statement by the Spokesperson on the announcements of the cancellation of EuroPride in Belgrade

Following the announcement to cancel the Europride, the EU encourages the Serbian authorities to continue their contacts with the organisers to find a solution to host the EuroPride in peace and security. We look forward to a final positive decision.

The EU attaches a lot of importance to this Pride taking place in peaceful circumstances and with the safety of the participants.

The EU supports equality and rejects all forms of discrimination. EuroPride was first held in 1992 and advocates for equal rights of LGBTIQ+ persons across Europe, giving a voice to those facing discrimination, violence or hatred for no reason other than their sex, sexuality or gender.

We expect our closest partners to commit to protection and promotion of human rights. This includes upholding the rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, including their right to freedom of assembly and expression in accordance with their constitution and international human rights obligations.
