Statement by the Spokesperson on the latest developments in Suriname
On 29 November 2019 Suriname’s Military Court convicted President Desi Bouterse of the murder of 15 opponents in December 1982. This is a matter that has deeply divided the country in the past.
The European Union reaffirms its firm solidarity with the families of the victims. For them, this verdict represents a long sought achievement and, hopefully, a consolation and closure.
The verdict is still subject to appeal. Without prejudging the final outcome, the persistent and tireless conduct of the trial since 2007 demonstrates the independence and integrity of the judiciary of Suriname.
The European Union will continue to support the independence and integrity of the judiciary of Suriname in the further legal process and reiterates its importance in terms of national reconciliation
