Statement by the Spokesperson on the latest events in Nicaragua
The liberation of prisoners detained since the demonstrations in April 2018 is an important development and a step in the right direction of complying with the commitments taken by the government in the March 29 agreements.
The full implementation of the agreements on political rights and guarantees is an indispensable next step to strengthen the fundamental rights of all citizens and restore confidence.
Moreover, as agreed by the parties, it is necessary to drop all charges and cases against those concerned, ensure the return of all their rights and property and provide full guarantees for their security. In this regard, the implementation of the non-repetition clause in the amnesty should not lead to renewed restrictions of political rights. The amnesty bill should not lead to an exoneration of those who have engaged in serious human rights violations during the repression of the protests. Accountability and reparation are important elements for truth, justice and reconciliation.
The EU calls for the resumption of the National dialogue to complete negotiations on justice and democracy.
The EU will continue to monitor closely the situation and stands ready to use all its instruments to support a peaceful and democratic exit to the crisis as foreseen in the EU Foreign Affairs Council conclusions of 21 January 2019.
