The European Movement International gives ‘Woman in Power’ award to Federica Mogherini on International Women’s Day

8 March 2018, Brussels

On International Women’s Day, the European Movement International handed over the Woman in Power award to Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission. The award was given as part of the Women of Europe Awards, which is jointly organised by the European Movement International and the European Women’s Lobby each year.

The awards honour women striving to advance the European project in their professional or private capacity. The role of women in the European project remains largely unrecognised, and the awards highlight the contribution of women in promoting and advancing European issues, and to increase the presence and involvement of women in debates about Europe and its future.

Ms. Mogherini, upon receiving her award stated:

“I would like to thank you for this prize but also for giving a voice to some extraordinary women from all walks of life. They are a source of inspiration for all of us, and for myself personally.”

Eva Maydell MEP, President of the European Movement International said:

“When we celebrate 8th  March we not only celebrate equal opportunities for women  but also female excellence. Women’s role in steering top politics and business in Europe needs to be recognised and supported. The Women of Europe Award of the European Movement is a symbolic mirror of  female talent and excellence.”

Joanna Maycock, Secretary General of the European Women’s Lobby, who are co-organisers of the event added:

“As countries across Europe celebrate the centenary of the right to vote for some women, it is remarkable to see how far we have come in strengthening women’s rights in the past century. Even so, gender equality in Europe has stagnated. Recently, data of the European Institute for Gender Equality 2017 Index (GEI) showed that women are still very much treated as second-class citizens in Europe. It is therefore time for a reinvigorated political impetus to put women’s rights and gender equality at the centre of the EU project. Movements to defend women’s rights under attack take to the streets from Poland to Ireland and are joined by newer actions such as #MeToo and the women’s marches. It is time to bring women’s voices into the heart of the political discussion about the future of Europe. This is exactly what the Women of Europe Awards celebrate!”

About the European Movement International

The European Movement is the largest pan-European network of pro-European organisations. It is present in over 30 countries and encompasses 36 international associations, bringing together European civil society, business, trade unions, NGOs, political parties, local authorities and academia. Founded nearly 70 years ago, we have continuously advocated in favour of European cooperation and integration, based on the principles of peace, democracy, liberty, solidarity, equality, justice, and respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Today the European Movement seeks to provide a platform to encourage and facilitate the active participation of citizens and stakeholders from a cross-section of sectors in the development of European solutions to our common challenges. We offer thought leadership on the issues that confront Europe; we seek to inform the debates on our Union’s future, involve citizens and stakeholders in the decisions that affect them and influence policy-makers in favour of an open, inclusive, transparent and united Europe
