The World in Archipelagos, for multilingual globalisation
“The World in Archipelagos, for multilingual globalisation”: a new event for debating ideas in Brussels based on Francophonie and multilingualism, which addresses the issues and challenges of globalisation. Launch on June 13th 2018 at 7pm at the Palais des Académies of Brussels on the theme of “Multilinguism and Diversity”.
Ours is an age of globalisation. Yet should this lead to the standardisation of the richness of humanity, namely its diversity in every field, including politics, economics, culture and language? Many would welcome such uniformity. But isn’t this seemingly unified humanity the most dangerous of illusions? Does it not lead to irremediable impoverishment which could jeopardise our chances of survival? It is time to realise that globalisation is not a uniform concept and that within it are differentiated areas, archipelagos which help maintain this diversity so vital for mankind.
The francophone space is one such archipelago. Does it contribute to preserving human languages? Can it serve as a laboratory for tomorrow’s mankind to invent new ways of understanding each other, interacting and building a unified, yet fair and diverse world? These are the questions our guests will attempt to answer in our series “The World in archipelagos”, an event which addresses the issues and challenges of globalisation.
Paul Germain, editor-in-chief at TV5MONDE and presenter on the shows Le Bar de l’Europe and C’est ça l’Europe will be moderating the discussions.
“The World in Archipelagos” is an initiative by the Alliance Française Bruxelles-Europe together with the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, the International Organisation of La Francophonie, Wallonie-Bruxelles International, the Service for Cooperation and Cultural Action of the Embassy of France in Belgium, the Embassy of Luxembourg in Belgium, the Embassy of Switzerland in Belgium, the Québec Government Office in Brussels, the Embassy of Tunisia in Brussels (Tunisian socio-cultural Centre in Brussels) and the Palais des Académies.
