Tracking Europe’s role in arming the Kremlin’s war machine
Monday 26 May 2025 | 10:00 – 11:30
Press Club Brussels Europe, Rue Froissart 95 – 1040 Brussels
Between 2014 and 2022, European companies exported millions of euros’ worth of precision machinery, such as computer numerical control (CNC) systems, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), lathes, and industrial testing equipment, to Russian firms now sustaining the Kremlin’s war effort in Ukraine.
A growing body of customs data reveals how these critical exports continued well into the years after Crimea’s annexation, exposing major enforcement gaps and raising questions about Europe’s responsibility in fuelling Russia’s military-industrial base.
To mark the upcoming launch of the world’s most comprehensive tool mapping these trade flows, not-for-profit Oblique Europe, in collaboration with leading customs data provider ImportGenius, is hosting a press briefing and discussion at the Brussels Press Club. Participants can be some of the first to register for early access to this resource.
The event will unpack how European technologies have supported Russian weapons production, highlight the suppliers and buyers involved, and demonstrate how public access to trade data can shed light on sanctions evasion and dual-use risks.
ImportGenius will also provide a hands-on training session for journalists and researchers on how to harness customs data to investigate international trade, sanctions evasion, and corruption.
Speakers include:
- Dylan Carter, investigative journalist and founder of Oblique Europe
- William George, Head of Research at ImportGenius
- Roman Steblivskyi, Senior analyst, Trap Aggressor (a project of the StateWatch think-tank.)
