THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD AT THE RESIDENCE PALACE
Dear journalists and news editors,
Following the success of the first and second editions, join us for the third breakfast briefing on the theme of climate change and its impact on our society, hosted by the Residence Palace – International Press Centre, together with international, European and Belgian journalist associations. This initiative is supported by the United Nations and the Belgian Federal Institute for Sustainable Development.
Background
The urgency of addressing climate change and sustainable development are critical social and economic issues that captivate public interest. A large majority of journalists (over 81%) are “very concerned” about climate change, according to a global survey directed by the IFJ.
We are therefore offering a series of on-the-record briefings tailored for journalists and news editors, featuring expert speakers who will provide valuable insights and resources for constructive journalism.
These breakfasts will be interactive and informal.
Registration is required by sending an email to: ellen.lorang@residencepalace.be

Speakers
Luc Triangle
Luc Triangle was elected General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) at the 6th ITUC Extraordinary World Congress in October 2023. The ITUC, the global trade union body which represents over 190 million workers, has demanded urgent action on climate funding for workforce transitioning ahead of COP29 climate summit. The ITUC noted that as the world moves towards low-carbon economies, climate finance is key to ensuring a just transition for workers. According to Luc Triangle, climate finance for a just transition must include funding for decent jobs in climate change mitigation, workforce development, and support for workers transitioning from high-emission sectors.
Lieve Verboven
Lieve Verboven is the Director of the Office of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to the EU and the Benelux countries. She is passionate about social justice and firmly believes in the power of social dialogue and collective bargaining to drive inclusive and sustainable growth and ensure decent work opportunities for all. She recently spoke at the Sustainable Development Goals Forum (SDG Forum) on the role of social protection in tackling the climate crisis.
Julie Bos
Julie Bos is EU Climate Justice Policy Advisor at Oxfam International. She joined Oxfam in July 2022 to work on the climate-land-food nexus and to influence European biofuel policies. She also works with climate justice colleagues across Oxfam on climate and inequality. An activist for a more sustainable and social Europe, she recently published a briefing paper on biofuel and transport policies. The paper called on EU Member States to add social sustainability criteria to protect people in biofuel supply chains, especially when produced in third countries, to cover respect for human rights through the whole value chain, including decent work, child work, and women’s and Indigenous Peoples’ rights. Julie’s academic background is in climate studies, alternative economic systems and public administrations.
