In the context of the European Union’s objective to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and the growing need to decarbonise transport across aviation, maritime and road sectors, this Mobility Mornings discussion will examine how eFuels can contribute to the transition and what is required to translate technological potential into industrial deployment.

While the European policy framework for renewable and low-carbon fuels continues to evolve, the scale of eFuel production and market deployment remains well below what would be required to support large-scale transport decarbonisation. At the same time, sectors such as aviation and maritime face structural constraints to direct electrification, placing greater attention on the role that synthetic fuels can play in delivering greenhouse gas reductions within existing fleets and infrastructure.

The question is therefore not only whether eFuels can contribute to the decarbonisation of transport, but how quickly production capacity, certification systems, investment frameworks and long-term demand signals can be developed to support a viable European market.

This session will bring together policymakers, industry representatives, fuel producers and transport stakeholders to examine:

  • The role of eFuels within Europe’s broader transport decarbonisation strategy
  • Policy frameworks shaping the development of a European e-fuels market
  • Industrial and investment conditions required to enable large-scale production
  • Demand signals and market structures capable of supporting long-term deployment
  • The contribution of eFuels to strengthening Europe’s energy resilience in periods of disruption

As Europe seeks to reconcile climate ambition with industrial competitiveness and energy security, the development of scalable eFuels supply chains has emerged as a strategic question for the transport sector. Achieving meaningful deployment will require coordinated action across policy, industry and finance.

The discussion will provide a forum for structured exchange, the sharing of perspectives and the identification of practical pathways to support the scaling of eFuels within Europe’s transport system.
