Ahead of the EU Environmental Council meeting on June 17, momentum is building for decisive climate policy that aligns with Europe’s industrial, security and climate objectives.

In this context, World Resources Institute, We Mean Business Coalition, and Strategic Perspectives invite media to a high-level strategic briefing and roundtable on the critical role of a science-based 2040 climate emission target and a progressive, timely 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in shaping the continent’s sustainable economic future.

The event will gather top EU policymakers, business leaders and experts to explore how bold and investment-sound climate action is essential — not optional — for strengthening Europe’s technological leadership, job creation and energy independence.

Why Now: Business Calls for Clear and Consistent Climate Action

The event comes amid rising business pressure for greater clarity and consistency in EU policy, in line with previous commitments.

  • Over 150 European CEOs recently signed a letter urging the EU to adopt a science-backed 90% emissions reduction target by 2040,  emphasizing the competitiveness, innovation and security benefits.
  • The European Commission has yet to put forward its revised EU Climate Law to the European Parliament, which will determine the emissions target for 2040 and the bloc’s updated NDC due to the UN by September 2025.
  • A new policy note from the We Mean Business Coalition and Corporate Leadership Group Europe will be presented, outlining how a robust, timely NDC will guide post-2030 investment, accelarateaccelerate renewables and enable a Clean Industrial Deal— top priorities in the first Global Stocktake.
