CBTI-ITI network event about old English: Friday 3 July at the Press Club

The Press Club in Brussels will be hosting an informal CBTI (Belgian Chamber of Translators and Interpreters) and ITI (UK Institute of Translators and Interpreters) networking event about old English on Friday 3rd July from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.

Join us for a friendly dive into old English, with plenty of history, linguistics and links to the German language!

Led by fellow translator Julian Hale and with special guest speaker Richard Croft, who studied old English at university, we’ll have a short talk by Richard followed by questions from you.

It’s a great opportunity to network and to learn about old English (with a handout given to everyone attending and possibly a short quiz).

This gives you a sense of what to expect: Following the departure of the Romans in c. 410 – Germanic invaders (Angles, Saxons and Jutes) brought their language, largely displacing Latin and the Celtic languages spoken at the time. What became Old English settled into four main dialects, Mercian, Northumbrian, Kentish and West Saxon…

And here’s something you may want to read before the event if you have the time and inclination: Wit, unker, git: The lost medieval pronouns of English intimacy: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260408-the-extinct-english-words-for-just-the-two-of-us

Contribution to costs: 10 euro (5 euro for students and unemployed and ‘low employed’)

Drinks/light snacks will be available

Email or text Julian Hale to register (with your preferred drink): JulianAHale@gmail.com / 0473 690749
