Danish language and culture evening (CBTI – ITI informal network)

with the support of the CBTI’s Anglo-French network (RAF) and the Press Club

After evenings devoted to Latin, the Brussels dialect and French, this time we’re heading north: to Denmark. The event will be in a mixture of English, French and, of course, a few words of Danish!

The format remains simple, friendly and relaxed: an informal gathering to discover a language, a country and a culture, without academic pressure, but with plenty of curiosity, questions and potential laughter.

During the first part (approximately 45 minutes), Julian will chat with Søren Dalsgaard, a former Danish interpreter who now works with visitors to the European Parliament. Together, they will discuss:

– Some basics of Danish and useful key phrases

– The links between Old English and Danish

– The Vikings (inevitable!)

– Some elements of Danish popular culture

– A little Danish politics, to set the scene

– Etymology, anecdotes and surely a few surprises

In the second part (again about 45 minutes), the floor will be open to everyone. You are strongly encouraged to come with:

– An anecdote related to Denmark or Danish

– A linguistic or cultural question

– An example of Danish influence (or English influence on Danish, or vice versa)

– Or simply your curiosity and desire to exchange ideas

Whether you already speak a little or plenty of Danish, are simply intrigued by the language, or are coming for the pleasure of discovery and conversation, you’re very welcome to join us.

We’ll provide some alcohol and snacks.

Participation fee (for food/drink): 10 euro (5 euro for unemployed, students or low employed)

After the session, those who wish to do so can continue the evening with dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Send me an email to register to JulianAHale@gmail.com and add what you would like to drink and if you plan to join us for dinner
