The EU talks a lot about values such as media freedom and democracy, but it doesn’t always live up to the ideals it espouses – with repercussions for journalists trying to do their jobs.

The challenges vary:

* Limited access to documents and difficulties getting them when they’re theoretically available;
* Proposed and ongoing legislation, as well as informal policies, to expand the classification of documents;
* The Commission reducing the number of opportunities to speak to experts and staff about their work;
* And the slimming down of the spokespersons’ service, limiting its ability to get into details

Together, all these factors make it harder to hold the EU institutions to account, just as they become relevant in ever more aspects of people’s daily lives.

The newly founded EU Journalism Initiative, a forum on reporting about EU topics and institutions by and for EU journalists, is launching with a panel discussion tackling exactly this topic.

On Tuesday 14 April (6 p.m.), come to the Press Club Brussels to meet other reporters, exchange on the topic of transparency, and hear the thoughts from members of our panel:

* Pascal Hansens – Investigate Europe
* Jean Comte – MLex
* Sarah Wheaton – Politico
* Kait Bolongaro – MLex

Moderated by EUJI’s Sonya Diehn, who has more than two decades of journalistic experience including senior editorial roles at Politico and Deutsche Welle.
