FuelsEurope and IOGP commissioned Wood Mackenzie, London based consultancy, to analyse and assess the impact the Methane Regulation could have on the EU’s supply of Oil & Gas as of 2027, date of entry into force of the regulation. The conclusions are rather alarming. The New study finds that EU Methane Regulation Risks Major Energy Supply Shock from 2027.
FuelsEurope and IOGP Europe are pleased to invite you to a media briefing to outline and discuss the significant impacts of the EU Methane Emissions Regulation could have on security of supply and industrial competitiveness.
Monday 9 March 2026 (11:00 – 12:00 CET)
Press Club Brussels Europe Rue Froissart 95, 1040 Brussels
In a nutshell:
From January 2027, new importer requirements set out in the regulation will oblige natural gas and crude oil importers to demonstrate compliance with EU-equivalent methane Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) standards or face potentially severe penalties.
A recent study by Wood Mackenzie shows that:
- Up to 43% of 2024 EU natural gas imports (≈114 bcm), and
- Up to 87% of 2024 EU crude oil imports (≈9.8 mb/d)
may not be compliant with the regulation in 2027 and could be excluded from the market, or trigger potentially severe penalties.
The media briefing will explain why, in addition to an urgent “stop-the-clock” mechanism, to make targeted adjustments to the Regulation and a pragmatic implementation approach are needed. It will also include a presentation on the key findings of the study by the authors, followed by Q&A.
Speakers:
- Liana Gouta, Director General, FuelsEurope
- François-Régis Mouton de Lostalot, Managing Director, IOGP Europe
- Gavin Law, Senior Vice President, Global Head of Gas, LNG and Emissions, Wood Mackenzie
