Panel Discussion Global Rights Compliance

Global Rights Compliance is a Netherlands-based international law foundation that works to strengthen accountability for serious violations of international law. Through our DPRK programme, we investigate the use of overseas labour and transnational repression by North Korea, and work with policymakers to ensure investigative findings are translated into policy responses.

REGISTRATION

The event will bring together two panels, each presenting new findings from GRC’s investigative work on how the DPRK extends its control over North Koreans abroad.

The first panel will launch GRC’s new report, an open-source and human-source investigation into Vladimir Sokolov, a Russian labour broker who brings North Korean workers into Russia under the guise of education. Panelists will walk through how the scheme operates, from site visits by the DPRK embassy to the placement of workers across the Russian economy, including labour contributions to Russia’s military-industrial complex.

The second panel will examine the system of transnational repression North Korea perpetrates against its citizens in Russia, China and South Korea. The panel will draw on findings from a joint investigation by GRC and the Seoul-based Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG) and will consider how host states collaborate to facilitate North Korea’s transnational repression, and how the EU can respond through improved policy action, targeted sanctions and stronger protections for those at risk.

We’d be delighted if you could join us. Places are limited, so please register via the link above.
