The global trade and economic environment is becoming increasingly fragmented due to deglobalisation, growing protectionism and onshoring and friendshoring. These trends have only been hastened by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In this context, issues such as a growing focus on economic security, the rebirth of industrial policy or the growing salience of digital trade, climate change and green growth are becoming more central to the global economy and trade. These changes have heightened the need for trade and economic security cooperation among the European Union, Korea and the United States. Pre-existing paradigms do not hold anymore.

To this end, the KF-VUB Korea Chair at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and the Korea Economic Institute (KEI) are organising an event on 11 June 2024 in Brussels for a discussion with former senior officials and experts on the policies necessary to address the changing trade and economic security environment.
