Carbon monoxide from heating and cooking causes 6,000 deaths annually in Eastern Europe, a number comparable to car accidents in Western Europe, a new Coolproducts research from the European Environmental Bureau reveals. Fossil fuel-based systems also lead to 900-1,800 fire-related injuries annually across Europe. In Member States where figures are collected thoroughly the numbers are much higher, suggesting that the total EU overall picture could be much more bleak. The findings highlight the urgent public health and safety risks of fossil fuel and biomass heating in European homes, emphasising the need for the EU to develop a comprehensive exit plan from combustion technologies.
Despite the negative effects of combustion technologies on our health, safety and climate, EUR 3.2 billion of taxpayers’ money was still allocated to fossil heating subsidies by national governments in 2022, while selected countries support biomass.
Join the European Environmental Bureau and the Cool Heating Coalition to discuss the findings of Burning Issues: Combustion Heating and Cooking Accidents in Buildings and explore pathways to decarbonising heating and cooking for safer, cheaper, cleaner homes across Europe.
