Journalists and civil society organizations from Europe, EU officials and representatives of political circles are invited to participate.

The annual meeting of the European Federation of Journalists in May of this year adopted a motion in which they noted that media recovery should be part of all programs to restore Ukraine.

The roundtable in Brussels takes place simultaneously with the Ukraine Recovery Conference (Berlin, 11-12 June). Earlier, a group of Ukrainian journalists and representatives of media organisations – participants of the International Training Programme (ITP)appealed to the organisers of the Ukraine Recovery Conference to include the recovery of Ukrainian media on the agenda. This appeal was signed by more than 120 Ukrainian journalists, media and civil society organisations, as well as well-known international organisations such as Free Press Unlimited, Reporters without Borders, Ukrainian Media Fund, Fondation Hirondelle and others.

Objective: Since the outbreak of full-scale war in Ukraine, many media outlets have ceased operations, especially in the frontline and liberated territories. Journalists who continue to work in these areas do so in extremely difficult conditions, often under fire. Russian missiles are actively destroying editorial offices and printing houses, making it difficult to carry out journalistic activities. The advertising market has been completely destroyed, so it is almost impossible for the media to raise funds from business. Due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, over 230 media outlets were forced to shut down.

Many countries and donors are involved in Ukraine’s recovery efforts, but unfortunately, the media itself is not included in these programs.

The conference participants will be able to talk live and hear evidence from journalists who live and work in close proximity to the front line, discuss ways to support Ukrainian media, and ways to possibly finance Ukrainian media from frozen Russian assets. The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine will present its proposals in providing long-term support to Ukrainian media to ensure the sustainable development of Ukrainian democracy.

We invite you to discuss and find a model for supporting independent freedom of speech.
