Understanding Investigative Journalism: How Europe’s Reporters Hold Power to Account

In conversation with Follow the Money and Investigate Europe

How do investigative journalists uncover stories that powerful institutions and companies would rather keep out of the headlines? How do they develop leads, obtain evidence and navigate the challenges of reporting on influential organisations?

The EU Journalism Initiative (EUJI) brings together journalists from two award-winning investigative newsrooms, Follow the Money and Investigate Europe, to discuss the methods, challenges and editorial decisions behind their reporting.

Speakers

Ella Joyner, Investigate Europe, will take us behind the scenes of the team’s investigation into the environmental impact and secrecy surrounding Big Tech data centres, shortlisted for the 2026 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism.

Simon Van Dorpe, Follow the Money, will discuss investigating corruption and corporate influence in Brussels, drawing on his reporting on the Huawei bribery scandal involving members of the European Parliament and the challenges of uncovering wrongdoing within EU institutions.

The evening will begin with short presentations from both speakers, followed by a moderated discussion and questions from the audience.

Due to limited space, attendance is capped at 20 people, with priority given to journalists.

Organised by the EU Journalism Initiative (EUJI), an independent, journalist-led initiative supporting professional development, knowledge exchange and community among journalists covering Europe.
