Press Club hosts discussion on the European Democracy Shield and the future of journalism

As part of the Press Club Brussels Europe’s 15th anniversary celebrations, the Club hosted “The European Democracy Shield and Journalism: Meet the People Behind the EU Media Toolbox”, organised in partnership with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The briefing brought together journalists, media professionals and stakeholders for an open discussion on the European Commission’s latest initiatives to strengthen media freedom, protect journalists and reinforce democracy across Europe.

Participants heard from Simona Constantin and Laetitia Close, from the Cabinet of European Commissioner Michael McGrath, who presented key elements of the European Media Freedom Act, the Anti-SLAPP Directive and the broader European Democracy Shield. The discussion provided valuable insight into the European Union’s evolving approach to safeguarding independent journalism and democratic resilience.

The event forms part of the Press Club’s 15th anniversary programme, a series of discussions dedicated to the major issues shaping journalism, media and public communication in Europe.

The Press Club Brussels Europe extends its sincere thanks to Simona Constantin and Laetitia Close for their contributions, and a very special thank you to our Board Member Oliver Money-Kyrle for leading the organisation of this event.
