The President of the European Council, António Costa, together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will represent the EU at the first EU-Jordan summit taking place in Amman on 8 January 2026. King Abdullah II will represent Jordan.
The summit will focus on bilateral relations and further deepening the political and economic partnership, as set out in the EU-Jordan Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership signed in January 2025. Leaders will also discuss the current global challenges, including the situation in the Middle East, Ukraine, security, trade and migration.
| “Jordan is a strategic partner for the European Union and plays a pivotal role in the Middle East. The EU deeply values Jordan’s leadership and its generosity in sheltering Syrian refugees for over a decade. Our first bilateral summit will provide a great opportunity to strengthen our partnership and tackle shared challenges in these turbulent times.” |

Background
In January 2025, the EU and Jordan took their relationship to the next level with the signature of the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership, covering 5 pillars of cooperation: political relations and regional cooperation; security and defence; economic resilience, trade and investment; human capital; migration, protection and support to refugees. The partnership is backed by a financial and investment package for 2025–2027, estimated at €3 billion.
The Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership builds on an already strong relationship, grounded in the Association Agreement since 2002 and the Jordan-EU Partnership Priorities (2021-2027). The last EU-Jordan Association Council took place on 15 July 2024.
