The Youth (and not only) is marching for everybody’s future (again)
On the evening of Friday 20th, Youth for Climate – together with Rise for Climate and with the support of dozens of other local actors that inhabit the political scene of Brussels and its EU bubble – is planning to take over the streets of the Belgian capital once again, starting from the Central Station, as part of the latest edition of the Global Climate Strike organised by Fridays For Future (of which Youth for Climate is the Belgian branch).
The request made by the climate warriors is simple but ambitious: a liveable future. Under the slogan of #NowForFuture the activists are trying to reclaim their future while the people in power refuse to recognise the different struggles that are hindering the just transition (such as climate change, wars, and economic inequalities, among others).
“During the next 2 days our leaders will meet in New York for the UN Summit of the Future. There, they’ll decide OUR future, and as we are not invited, we decided to yell at them what to do from outside. We won’t allow them to ruin our future without fighting.”
-Eliot, member of Youth for Climate.
Youth for Climate and Rise for Climate ask specifically that our governments start taking action for our future (a very concrete request of this edition is the signing of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty) and that the European Union continue establishing and enforcing ambitious regulations that lead the EU towards a fairer and more eco-friendly society.
“Thousands of scientists and NGOs and 101 Nobel Prize winners support a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, but only 12 island countries and Colombia support it. No major power and no European country supports it, and yet this is the decisive aspect of the problem. Where there are fossil fuels, there is no future.”
-Kim, member of Rise for Climate.
But for the two groups of activists, marching rhymes with having fun: for the occasion, the two groups prepared a thrilling line-up. The march leaves the Central Station at 18:30, but the action starts at 17:30 with music from the indie artists Ucci Why and GETCH and short speeches from people with diversified backgrounds such as the former vice-president of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Jean-Pascal van Ypersele and representatives of the Belgian and European civil society!
“Marching means singing and dancing for our rights. It’s not a coincidence that a march is always led by music: where there are melodies there is hope. That’s why our march will be led by Brazilian percussionists. After all, music and intersectional environmentalism are two things that cross borders.”
-João, member of Youth for Climate.
The Global Climate Strike will be followed at 20:00 by an aftermarch free drinks organised by Youth for Climate only for young people interested in the world of environmental activism.
