Iran: Statement by the High Representative Josep Borrell on the Sakharov prize

Every year, the Sakharov Prize honours those who stand up to defend human rights and fundamental freedoms. This year, the Sakharov prize is awarded to the memory of Mahsa Amini and to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” Movement. Iranian women have been the force driving the protests, making their aspirations for a better future free from oppression heard around the world. They ask for respect, justice, and equality – nothing more, nothing less. Today’s award is in recognition of their inspiring courage to stand up against the oppression of women and their commitment to promote human rights for all in Iran.

Mahsa Amini’s family was invited to the award ceremony today in Strasbourg. Regretfully, and despite our efforts and requests, including to the Iranian Foreign Minister, to allow and facilitate their presence, Mahsa Amini’s family was banned from travelling and their passports were confiscated. This is another deplorable act of suppression of fundamental freedoms. The European Union deeply regrets and condemns the decision of the Iranian authorities.

On the occasion of this important recognition to the people of Iran, the EU reiterates its firm support for a future where the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens in Iran are respected, protected, and fulfilled.
