Hydrogen Europe is proud to announce the publication of its latest report: ‘Long-term outlook on zero-emission mobility’. Using aggregated data from the responses of 99 Hydrogen Europe members with a stake in the mobility sector, the report provides analyses and projections on the development of European zero-emission mobility from now until 2050.
The respondents provided an overview of their current commitments and projections in zero-emission mobility, laying the basis for a deeper understanding of where Europe stands at present. Subsequently, they highlighted their expectations on the role of key available technologies – including clean hydrogen – in reducing emissions from the transport sector in the long-term, listing the main bottlenecks that are currently hampering their deployment. In its conclusion, the report makes recommendations on how to address these issues, touching upon the main regulatory and financial priorities that need to be tackled to provide an encouraging framework for hydrogen deployment.
Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, said: “This report sheds light on where the hydrogen sector’s own stakeholders see the zero-emission mobility sector at present, and where they see it heading in the long-term. What our report shows is that we will need both batteries and hydrogen to fully decarbonise our transport network – two infrastructures are better than one! Transitioning away from conventional mobility will require clear policy support and investments for these technologies”.
80.6% of respondents agreed that hydrogen compressed to 700 bar was the most suitable solution for long-haul trucking, falling to 70.3% for the suitability of liquid H2 to long-haul trucking. Meanwhile, roughly the same percentage of respondents supported the suitability of batteries (62.4%) and H2 compressed to 350 bar (62.8%) as a long-term solution to urban buses. In shipping, E-fuels were by far the preferred choice for bulk carriers and container ships, with 48.6% and 51.4% of respondents respectively saying they were “perfect fits”.
The report is a useful outlook of the views of some of the leaders in Europe’s mobility or mobility-adjacent sectors, thereby indicating the likely direction and shape of the push for zero-emission transport, ranging from passenger cars to commercial jets; this comprehensive overview allowed for the identification of the most promising technology according to each type of transport.
