Media advisory: High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell travels to Djibouti

High Representative/Vice President (HR/VP) Josep Borrell will be on official visit to Djibouti from July 6 to July 8. The mission will provide an opportunity to strengthen the bilateral ties with Djibouti as a key partner for the EU in the region, and to appraise the impact of the EU naval operations in the broader region.

Before his visit to Djibouti, on Friday, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will travel to Greece, where he will meet with George Gerapetritis, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Greece. Following this meeting, the HR/VP will visit the operational Headquarters of the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, located in Larissa. The High Representative will also deliver a press point with Nikos Dendias, Minister for Defence of Greece, which can be followed on EbS.

High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will then travel to Djibouti. On Saturday, he will visit the military vessels operating under EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, and then the detachment of EUNAVFOR ATALANTA in Djibouti. Combined with the visit to EUNAVFOR ASPIDES’ Operational Headquarters, these engagements will allow for a first-hand appreciation of how EU operations contribute to regional security, and to have a direct exchange with all European men and women serving to protect freedom of navigation.

On Sunday, HR/VP Borrell will visit the EU-funded Doraleh desalination plant, which contributes to the growing needs of the city of Djibouti and increases the country’s independence in terms of water resources.

On Monday, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will hold a series of bilateral meetings, including with Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of Djibouti, and Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti. The meeting will be followed by a press conference by HR/VP Borrell, which will be available on EbS.

Audiovisual material of the whole mission will be uploaded on EbS. Follow the High Representative and the European External Action Service on social media for live updates.
