The European Union welcomes the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”.
As a prominent Iranian human rights advocate and member of Iranian NGO “Defenders of Human Rights Centre”, Narges Mohammadi has always campaigned for women’s rights, the abolition of the death penalty and the improvement of prison conditions inside Iran.
She is currently jailed in Iran and serving multiple sentences amounting to 12 years of imprisonment. She never stops using her voice to protect human dignity and the rights of Iranians, even from her prison cell. She is an inspiration to all of those who believe that human rights are the foundation of peaceful and democratic societies.
The EU will continue to advocate for the respect of human rights in Iran and elsewhere and for the freedom of all of those who are – like herself – unjustly detained.
