Our second objective is to look ahead together. Our new “Alliance for the Future” will allow us to deepen our partnership across six strategic sectors. What does this mean in practice for our citizens and companies?
It means fewer barriers to trade, more investments, and closer cooperation on critical raw materials. It means deepening collaboration in research and innovation, building on the success of Canada’s participation in Horizon Europe. It means better protecting our citizens against health crises and natural disasters. Canada’s contribution to tackle wildfires in Europe has demonstrated the strength of our solidarity. It means bringing our people closer together, making it easier to study and work across the Atlantic, including through a new Youth Mobility Partnership. Finally, it means deepening our political and institutional ties.
And this is our third objective:
Fifty years ago, our first framework agreement spoke of the “common heritage”, the “special affinity” and the “shared aspirations” that unite us. Today, the time has come to build a broader and deeper political and institutional partnership, one that reflects the major partners, strategic allies and close friends we have become.
That’s why we are starting an ever-closer association. Our relationship is so special that we want to create something new: to go beyond a simple association, everything short of full EU membership. Our association will be the closest, deepest and most unique of its kind.
We will do it through closer engagement at the highest political level. And by identifying shared priorities and coordinating our responses to common challenges. We are already putting this into practice.
Dear Mark, I was delighted to welcome you in Yerevan last May, as the first non-European leader to attend a European Political Community summit. And we look forward to welcoming you again in Dublin in two weeks.
But we can go further. It is great news that you and Ursula agreed to have a College to Government meeting in the Spring. And I will be delighted to host you at our European Council in June. Like you, Mark, I believe that our alliance should serve as a beacon for other democracies. At a time when the international rules-based order is under pressure, we share a special responsibility to defend it.
We have seen the power of our cooperation. When the European Union and Canada jointly launched the Partners for Multilateralism initiative during the last United Nations General Assembly High Level Week, many other nations quickly joined our call for effective multilateralism and collective action to uphold international law and tackle global challenges.
We are choosing to navigate a new course across the Atlantic together, with a clear direction and a shared determination to shape the future.
Today, we embark on a new chapter. With ambition, with confidence and with the wind in our sails!
